The SBSC GU12 Red team had a memorable run this season at State Cup. After winning their pool in pool play, they proceeded to win two more games in the round of 32 and 16 before eventually falling in the Round of 8.
In pool play, the team started with a tie against FC San Diego. Even though the team dictated the pace of the game they could not find the opponents back of the net. The Defensive line of Jacqueline Hewitt, Emma Wagner, Anya Schmitz, and Adele Shraiman were outstanding in their defensive responsibilities, and Brandi Lentini, did an outstanding job of keeping the ball out of our net.
In the second game of pool play, the team competed against HB Riptide. Again, the play was mostly dominated by SBSC, but finding the back of the net was becoming a problem. With less than a few minutes left in the game, the team played a couple of great combinations which found Maya Pico wide open on the right side of the goal and she calmly slotted the ball into the far post for a 1-0 victory.
In the final game of pool play, the team played Irvine Premier. The midfield did a great job controlling the initial moments of the game. Saylor Yoos, Ava Troiani, Madison Cleek, Demi Jimenez, Zoe Jessup, Lucia Lynn, and Lauren Buie were doing a fine job dictating the pace of the game, however, Irvine began to take control physically and started to win every loose ball, however, a great ball by Demi found Maya for the first goal. Just before the half was over, Irvine capitalized on one of our mistakes and scored the equalizer. The second half was a game of brute determination by both teams, and with less than 5 minutes remaining Abbey Willet of a great combination play with Lucia found the back of the net for the eventual game winner.
The round of 32 game was against Fram. The game started out exceptionally well for the girls, with Adel finding the back of the net less than 10 minutes into the game. Fram eventually tied the score before halftime, but the girls were not to be denied. The second half saw numerous opportunities by both sides and with less than a minute left, Demi had a set piece from 25 yards out and found the back of the net for the winner.
In the Sweet 16 game the team was paired against the crusaders, their Northern neighbors. This game was probably the most exciting game of the tournament for the team. The girls initially went up a goal when Abby put the ball in the back of the net. However the crusaders never gave up and battled and with both teams competing, the game became incredibly exciting for all those watching. With less than 30 seconds left in the game, the crusaders snatched victory from the girls by scoring the equalizer off of a great combination play. Most teams at this point would shut down, but our girls showed true grit and continued to battle. After a scoreless first overtime, and minutes and seconds counting down in the second overtime, we believed that we were headed to a shoot out to find the eventual winner. However with less than 10 seconds remaining Demi crossed the ball to the far post which found Maya, who calmly took a touch by the defender and finally slotted the ball away for the Victory. On a side note, Brandi was exceptional in the net for us in this game to even allow us to have a chance to come away with a win. Great job Brandi. An incredible ending to an incredible game.
In the Quarter Finals, we finally ran out of gas against the Untouchables from Fountain Valley. As much as we tried to get to all the loose balls, we just seemed a step or two slower than our opposition, but non the less we continued to battle till the final whistle with the Untouchables coming ahead with a 2-0 win over us.
The Girls should be extremely proud of their accomplishments through out this season. Other members of the team who contributed towards this great run are Nicole Bennet and Madison Minier. A special thank you to the parents for their great support and to Susie Minier for being a great administrator/Manager and for Jeff Yoos stepping up in her absence to help us out.
