The GU12 team had a very successful weekend by winning the Ventura Fusion Tournament.
In pool play the team opened up against the River Valley Rovers. Even though both teams had some chances in the first period, neither one could find the back of the net. In the second half, the girls pulled together and controlled most of the game, but again, they could not find the back of the net, with the game ending in a 0-0 tie.
Game 2, against Orcutt, was much different, with Maya Pico finding the back of the net twice in the opening period. In the second half, two more additional goals were scored, one by Madison Cleek, and the other by Brandi Lentini. The back line of Jacqueline Hewitt, Anya Schmitz, Lauren Buie, and Adele Shraiman continued their solid play with getting another shutout. Also Brandi Lentini and Madison Minier did an outstanding job splitting time in the net for another clean sheet.
Game 3 was against the CV Breeze. The game was completely dominated by our girls however within ten minutes we found ourselves down 0-1 by an own goal. However, the players continued their pressure and finally broke through with Maya scoring her third goal of the tournament which was assisted by Saylor Yoos and Madison Cleek. A few minutes later Zoe Jessup did some crafty foot work to get into the attacking third and served the ball to the far post, where a wide open Lucia Lynn tapped the ball in for the eventual game winner.
Game 4, the semi-final match, was against Santa Monica. The team found itself down 0-1 after a good strike by the opponents. We could barely find any rhythm and struggled for a good portion of the second half. With time winding down, Nicole Bennet, scored the most exciting goal of the tournament from an improbable angle to tie the score up with less than a minute remaining. The goal seemed to energize the players and the two over time periods were controlled by us, but again we could not find the net. The game proceeded to go to shootouts and went to the 6th shooter and due to Brandi Lentini making two crucial saves in the shootout the girls won 5-4 in pk’s.
The Championship game was once again against the River Valley Rovers. However unlike the first game, the girls controlled the entire game and Maya continued her scoring streak and put two more in the back of the net to allow the team to win their first title. The midfield line of Madison Cleek, Demi Jimenez, Lucia Lynn, and Saylor Yoos did a tremendous job of controlling most of this game.
Even though there were many different players who stepped up throughout the entire tournament (Maya 5 goals, Brandi PK saves, Nicole’s goal, the entire back line) Jacqueline Hewitt won the team MVP for an outstanding job in the back line and playing exceptional defense. Congratulations to all the Girls for a great tournament.
