the BU14 White had consecutive 2-1 victroies against Attack Green of SanDiego and Pateadores from Orange County to put themseves with in one game of winning National Cup.

BU16 White moved on to the Semi-Final of National Cup scoring 8 goals in 2 games. They beat Real SO Cal 4-0 and SMSC 4-1 as they move confidently on to the next round. Should they win Saturday they play in the final Sunday.

BU17 & GU17 White lost in the round of 16 this past weekend

This is a fantastic achievement on Mari’s part and we are all very proud of her achievements as she represents Santa Barbara at the National level.

Dana Weymouth, current head coach of the GU16 White team said “I have worked with Mari for 9 months now. She is the type of player that you build around. She is a classic center midfielder that can head and tackle, but what makes her special is her ability to pass and receive in tight spaces. With that being said, I have enjoyed the luxury of her playing out wide and up front for me as well. She has a great soccer IQ, she can score goals and her pace is good. She has been a joy to coach, very dedicated and works as hard as anyone on the team.” Dana went on to say, “ I think it is a tremendous achievement to make the National team squad. It shows that she can perform with the best players in California and around the world. I have always believed that Mari can go really far with soccer and this is just one of those steps toward a great future.”

Gloria, Mari’s Mum shared her thoughts saying “Long before our children can do anything on their own we wish the best for them and aspire to give them the essential tools to achieve anything that they want.  For my daughter Mari, that has meant nurturing the prospect of higher education as well as promoting her opportunities to play soccer.”

Gloria also said, “Mari has always been perceived as a reserved, book smart and caring individual.  The Santa Barbara Soccer Club since 2004 has provided an arena for her to assert herself as a player.  During the past eight years the Santa Barbara Soccer Club has challenged Mari to develop her skill and technique as a soccer player and to blossom as a teammate and to ultimately grow and develop as an individual. “

Mari’s Mother Gloria finished by stating, “The fact that Mari is currently this far in the selection process for the U 17 Mexican National Team is an experience that we will never forget.  We are all very proud of her and throughout this process she has remained true to her reserved demeanor.  That’s my girl!”

Mari herself, when ask to comment on the experience and achievement had this say “Its been a long, memorable road into the Mexican National Team Program, one that I will never forget. Although, I did not succeed in making the final cut, I believe it was a great experience that I fulfilled to the maximum intention. I was first scouted by the Mexican National Team recruiters a couple years ago, and I feel that all the different techniques I learned from Santa Barbara Soccer Club coaches, Brian (Toes) , Marco Medina, and Dana Weymouth, had definitely given me a bigger chance to be a part of programs like these. I want to thank the Santa Barbara Soccer Club for bringing out the soccer athlete in me that has given me the potential in competing against the highest expectations to challenge myself as a player and a person.”

Mari is truly an example of the opportunities that are available though soccer when the athlete is focused and determined to work hard and with purpose. Mari is also a great example of how character is built and developed using the medium of soccer.

Rachel’s ultimate goal was to play at the highest level in California so that her family and friends could attend her games. Rachel has been humble and gracious in accepting this great accolade remarking “I am so grateful to my parents, coaches, teammates, and SBSC for helping make my soccer dreams come true.”

Rachel’s Current Coach, Jeff Johnson (JJ) had this to say about Rachel “She has been one of the hardest working female players I have ever worked with.  She is versatile, can hit the ball with pace and accuracy, great in the air, a leader, committed with a high work ethic, determined and relentlessly strives to win every match and every competition in training.  She is a model player and a dream for any coach to be able to work with at the collegiate level.  I see Rachel only improving in college and getting better and better each year.  I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see her on the US national team some day if she desired.  This is an individual that when she sets her mind on something she finds a way to get it done!  It has been a treat to have coached this player and more importantly to have developed a friendship that will last forever.  She will always be my captain!”

Lloyd Biggs, Santa Barbara SC Coaching Director in congratulating Rachel said

“You most definitely deserve it through your dedication to the game over many years! Thank you also for your commitment and loyalty to Santa Barbara SC. In modern day club soccer it is hard to find such commitment from a player. You are a credit to your parents and also proof that talent, hard work, patience and loyalty does breed success. I wish you the best of luck for the future!”

Obviously Rachel’s parents are super proud of her, Rachel’s Mother Michelle beamed “We are very proud of Rachel’s accomplishments on the soccer field and will always be grateful to the Santa Barbara Soccer Club for preparing her to play at the Division 1 level. Rachel enjoyed the benefit of two top-quality coaches in Brian Lloyd and Jeff Johnson who patiently taught Rachel the fundamental technical and strategic aspects of the game.”

As proof of her dedication and commitment to be the best she can be Rachel always took advantage of the extra training that Santa Barbara SC offered, like Going to Goal, One v.One, and some individual coaching sessions. As Rachel grew older she was also able  “to give back” by coaching some of the next generation of SBSC athletes in the U8 Development program.

We are all very proud of Rachel and wish her luck as steps up to play at the next level.

The history of this team is reflective of the development that takes place at SBSC.  The team has slowly worked its way through the ranks by finishing 1^st in every CSL Division from Bronze through Gold along the way. The base for the team success comes from a core of group of players that have been playing together since they were U10.  Players like Robbie Landeros, Pepe Barron, Tanner Charest, Ricky Arroyo, Luis Ortiz, Eric Kam, Victor Saldana, & Johny Requejo who is currently with the US National U18 Team.  The development of this group of players was initiated by Matt Winecki. During the last two years the team has been coached by Rudy Ybarra, and Nelson Cestoni. Currently they are led by Coaching Director, Lloyd Biggs and Jesus Landeros.  The roster now includes players from Ventura to San Luis Obispo.  These players from throughout the coast continue to gel, develop, have a great time and compete at a high level within the structure of SBSC.  The complete current roster is:

Congratulations to our Champions and Finalists! The Copa Real Tournament hosted by Real So Cal attracts the top competition in the state and beyond. Santa Barbara SC was well represented on the trophy list http://www.realsocal.org/tournaments/index_E.html.

The Golf Tournament Fundraiser was held at the Santa Barbara Golf Club on Friday Dec 23rd. 120 golfers that ranged from 7-70 years old participated in a round of golf that featured a soccer hole, longest drive with a tennis racquet, BMW and Ford cars for hole in one prizes, a limited edition Arnold Palmer signed print and more. Thank you to everyone involved for being a part of what turned out to be a huge amount of fun. Golfers, donors, sponsors, organizers and volunteers, you were all hugely important to the cause and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Sam Strong and Justin Vom Steeg, who is currently playing with the full U15 National team squad, have been called up to the 1997 pool, Juan Pablo Alvarez and Carson Vom steeg have been called up to the 1998 pool and Chloe Hamer, Brianna Welsh, Ben Roach and Juanito Zarate have been called up to the 1999 pool.

These players follow in the footsteps of Jonnie Requejo who was developed as a player at Santa Barbara Soccer Club. Jonnie is currently a part of the US U17 residential program in Florida and a full member of the U17 National team squad.

John and Mardi Warkentin and members of the Puailoa family cut the ribbon at opening of the Warkentin Stadium and Puailoa Field at San Marcos High School. The Field of Champions, a nonprofit local group that set a million dollar goal to build a permanent turf field at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, celebrated its completion as hundreds of supporters and student athletes looked on yesterday.

The 40-year-old soccer/track/football/general purpose grass field was completed over the summer; a new track circling the multi-use field was also added to the construction plans. A $500,000 gift from the Warkentin Family included $100,000 designated for improvements to the nine-year-old track and the addition of track and field competition space. 

The fundraising partnership “The Field of Champions Campaign” was forged with the Santa Barbara Soccer Club, San Marcos High School, and community members to achieve the common goal of enhancing the quality of the Sut Puailoa Field at San Marcos High School, used by over 24,000 youth athletes, community groups, coaches, teachers, spectators, and community members a year.

It is wonderful to see a player, developed at Santa Barbara Soccer Club make it to the highest levels of the game and even more wonderful to have her available to help develop the next generation of Santa Barbara Soccer players.

The team advanced to the playoffs coming in second in pool play with 2 wins and one loss. They beat Newbury Park Black cats 5:0 and Simi Valley Chivas 7:0. Their loss was to Real So Cal Blue 0:5.

For the playoffs they played Real So cal again, this time the game was a lot closer; 1:3.

In the tournament the team scorers were: Johanna Holland, Molly Autio and Blythe Hastings each with 3 goals, Kate Dalforno with 2 goals and Emilia Wahlberg and Grace Blankenhorn each with 1 goal.

With concern over the negative effects of fast food diet and inactivity of children growing all over the world, the children enrolled at Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS), are being given lessons on diet and nutrition in addition to technical soccer skills. 

The coaches at the school hope the curriculum will help children foster an appreciation for good health. 

“The kids are usually surprised when we talk about nutrition and fitness, but it’s a really important part of the game,” said Chris Rosimus, a qualified nutritionist and MUSS coach in Abu Dhabi.

“Professional players learn about diet and training really early on in their careers and we want to use the Manchester United team as role models to motivate the children towards a healthier lifestyle. Our goal is that students should apply the health advice in their everyday live so that they can have an overall healthy lifestyle and excel in the sport.”

The first nutrition session discussed the importance of hydration. The children were encouraged to think about what kind of drink they should consume before, during and after a football match. 

After the session, many parents said  that their children chose water over canned drinks in a bid to improve their health and ability.

“In football, health is just as important as learning how to deliver a crisp pass or a winning shot, and in terms of quality of life and longevity it’s even more significant,” said Rosimus. 

A decline in the intake of calcium among school children is a matter of concern for both parents and teachers.

Teachers opine that calcium is important during early adolescence, when more  mineral is needed during a three to four year period when bone growth is at peak  and 40 per cent of total bone mass is accumulated.

Moreover, calcium strengthens bones and teeth and regulates muscle functioning, such as contraction and relaxation.  

“The junk food children consume today releases so much energy in them that they find it difficult to pay attention to the studies in the classroom,” Leila added.

While Thadhani, a marketing researcher, with three young school-going children said that many school students’ food contains junk food. 

“Children from grade one onwards are bombarded with fast food and cola advertisements. They should be given protein and calcium rich food instead of fast food and colas for strong bones and general health”.

Cal South scores in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP)

 Cal South won 6 out of 8 Championships at the Region IV ODP Championships in Phoenix, AZ over the weekend.  Cal South has won more National and Regional ODP championships than any other state association.

 Players representing Santa Barbara Soccer Club on these teams included:

 Sam Strong who won with the ’96’s

 Avery Swartz, Emmanuel Boateng & Joshua Savett who won with the ’94’s

 -and-

 Luis Carbahal who won with the ’97’s

 Justin Vom Steeg was supposed to be with ’97’s as well, but was called in with the U-14 National Team Camp in Guadalajara, Mexico. He played in his first game on Tuesday. Team USA beat Chivas 1-0.

This year, the Goleta Relay For Life was better than anticipated. The goal was for 20 teams, and $25,000, but there were nearly 25 teams, 300 participants, and over $45,000 raised to help support cancer research!  

The event kicked off to the tune of Destiny’s Child’s "Survivor" and cancer survivors flooded the track for their commencement lap. The afternoon passed on with music, food (provided by Chili’s, Outback Steakhouse & McDonalds), games, and laughter until the sun began to set. At 8PM the Luminaria ceremony began, and the track was lit by hand-decorated bags in memory of and in honor of those who have fought cancer. At 10PM, the outdoor cinema started as well as the "Pajama Parade." Walkers continued on through the wee morning hours, taking shifts, loading up on coffee, and occasionally resting a bit back in the tents. As the hours passed on, people started looking more and more like zombies. The sun began to rise, and replacements started showing up providing relief for those who had taken the middle-of-the-night shifts. At 7:30 AM, yoga started and allowed some much-needed stretching. At about 8AM, with walkers still on the track, everybody began packing up in anticipation of the closing ceremonies. At 10AM, the Committee announced that we had surpassed our goal by more than $20,000 and we all took our final victory lap. Take that, cancer.

A HUGE thanks to our main team members: Darcia Stebbens, Lorie Bacon, Myles Adams, Fred Hartzman, Sarah Rettinger, Amanda Lyon, Sophie Dinkin, Kelly Gallagher, and Roxanne Love.

Overall, this is a solid start to the tournament season as the GU15 White team prepares for the National Cup!

Other significant mentions go to BU12 White, GU13 White, BU16 White & GU16 White who will all compete in Gold. Two Red teams will compete in Silver this season BU12 Red and GU17 Red.

The girls played 6 games total, record 5-0-1, scoring 7 goals and conceding only 2 beating ACC Maverick, ranked 15th in Northern California, in the final.

Congratulations to the girls on a great victory and good luck to them as they continue to prepare for National Cup.

Santa Barbara Soccer Club would like to congratulate Juan Pablo and his Family on this great achievment.

Coach Rudy Ybarra, BU13 White Head Coach, had this say in regard to Juan Pablo:

His commitment at training and matches are evidence that Juan Pablo is developing into a complete soccer player. His abilities on both sides of the ball are what make him a solid player at this current time. Juan Pablo is playing at Left back for our BU13 White Team and he is defending very well. His ability to make attacking runs from his left back position reminds me of Roberto Carlos, a stand out player for Brazil and Real Madrid in his playing days. To add Juan Pablo has developed into a goal scoring threat this season with his strong and accurate shooting ability, the service he provides from his overlapping attacking runs have created many scoring chances for his team. It is a pleasure to coach this young player and I look forward to being part of his future development as a player and person.

It is nice to see that (ODP) Olympic Development Program Scouts and Coaches have selected Juan Pablo Alvarez to part of this Great Program.

Special mention goes to the BU9 White (10-0-1) & GU16 White (8-0-3) teams who finished their season with a remarkable unbeaten record and each at the highest levels of the game in their age brackets.

The girls side of the program scored 82 goals and conceded only 5 on their way to victory

Santa Barbara Soccer Club would like to congratulate Brian Illes and his Family on this great achievment.

Coach Rudy Ybarra, BU12 White Head Coach, had this say in regard to Brian:

Brian comes to training ready to work day in day out he is very quick and has excellent speed. Brian’s technical development has really developed these past two years and his balls skills are very good. This is a credit to his hard work at training and the extra work he has put into working with the ball, attending the club 1V1 session. Brian can play in all three lines on the field as a Defender, Midfielder or Forward and this is a special quality that will help Brian in his future development as a soccer player. Brian always comes to training and matches with a smile on his face, his nick name is "SMILES" and he really does enjoy training and playing the beautiful game.

Started in 1999, the U.S. Soccer Under-17 Residency Program has become a symbol of U.S. Soccer’s dedication to increasing the development opportunities for players and the success of the Youth National Teams. 

The U.S. players live on campus at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and train in the morning under the guidance of Cabrera and assistant coaches Paul Caffrey, Gerson Echeverry, Paul Grafer and Eric Imler. In the afternoon, the players attend classes at St. Stephens Episcopal School. While in the full-time residency program, the U.S. not only trains daily under Cabrera, but also has access to the IMG Academy’s spacious facilities. 

With 40 players in Residency, the program is able to field two full teams that train together during the week, and get the chance to compete against club, college and international teams on the weekends

We wish Jonnie the best of luck as he continues to compete with and against the best in the world.

Equal Distribution

The total amount of scholarship money that is available for season 2011-12 will be distributed equally between every team in the club.

Examples

Scholarships will still be means tested and only players that qualify will be awarded scholarship money.

Any scholarship money that has not been allocated after the first round of awards will go back into a scholarship pool and the funds will be distributed as requested.

Important

·       All scholarship applications should be turned into the coach along with registration.

·       All Registration and Scholarship Packets must be accompanied by a full registration fee

·       A scholarship application cannot be accepted without a registration packet.

·       Incomplete registration or scholarship applications will not be reviewed

·       A scholarship packet will not be reviewed without the necessary tax return information

 With 12 years of coaching experience complemented by a degree in economics and business, Billy possesses both the soccer knowledge and business savvy to help lead Santa Barbara SC towards being a more effective, organized, and successful Club. Santa Barbara SC has progressed immensely over the past few years, and we intend to keep that momentum.

 The appointment of Billy to the Executive Director position will allow him to focus and grow the Club from the business side and allow Coaching Director Lloyd Biggs to direct his full attention to the development of the coaches and players in the Club. Billy’s primary area of responsibility will be to manage the vision and direction of Santa Barbara SC. In order to accomplish this, Billy will continue to coach as well as initiate new fundraising opportunities, establish strong lines of communication internally and externally, and focus on overall quality control.

 We are very excited about this transition, and for what is to come as a result of it. Look forward to more great things from Santa Barbara SC!
