WCDA is proud to welcome into this program Arsenal (CO), Colorado Storm (CO), Boulder FC (CO), New Mexico Rush (NM), Rio Soccer Club (NM), La Roca (UT), Crossfire Premier (WA), Washington Premier (WA), FC Portland (OR), Oswego Southside Soccer Academy (OR), San Juan SC (CA), Juventus (CA), Diablo (CA), De Anza (CA), Eastside FC (WA), FC Nova (ID), Santa Barbra (CA), Fullerton Rangers (CA), Albion (CA), San Diego (CA), Carlsbad (CA), Downtown Las Vegas (NV), Central Cal Blue (CA), Players SC (NV), LA Premier FC (CA) and South Bay Force (CA) as one of the founding members of the Girls initiative. More Clubs to be announced in the next few weeks. Each of these clubs has done outstanding work, and WCDA is thrilled to begin working with the girls teams. They join the thirty youth Boys soccer clubs that currently form the WCDA, with teams representing clubs in Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Oklahoma and Colorado.

"Santa Barbara SC is very excited that the WCDA have added a Girls program to their association. The WCDA girls program will be great addition to the already growing and strengthening girls program we have here at Santa Barbara SC. More quality competition, different competition and the opportunity to showcase our players in front of College coaches is fantastic”, says Jens Amlie, Santa Barbara SC Girls Director of Coaching.  

In place is a solid foundation of WCDA clubs, and it is anticipated to have 25-30 Girls programs in year one. WCDA currently has three conferences - Mountain, North Pacific and Southwest Pacific. The top teams from each conference will be invited to Seattle in May 2014 for the College Showcase Finals.

WCDA has partnered with some of the top college Showcases including SOCAL Showcase (LA Premier), Carlsbad November Nights (Carlsbad SC), and Players College Showcase (Players Club). These showcases attract soccer coaches from numerous elite colleges, and all WCDA teams participate in these prestigious events.

The Girls WCDA will also highlight players in the U16 and U17 division of the program. An All WCDA Team will be chosen to participate in the Finals Showcase in May. Players invited to the All WCDA team will only contribute to travels costs, and WCDA will cover all other expenses.

The WCDA will continue to create a solid platform of high quality competition and enhanced college readiness opportunities for the Boys WCDA and is thrilled to instill and foster this base for the new Girls program.

U10 White team defeats the best teams in Southern California to win prestigious championship.

SBSC U10 White kicked off the RSC Copa Real Invitation (Flight #1) on Saturday morning, January 19, with a convincing 3-1 win over Real So Cal BU10 White. The boys followed this up with a hard fought tie against Pateadores Irvine in the afternoon, the final score coming in at 2-2. On Sunday morning SBSC beat the defending state cup finalist Chivas USA Youth Academy 2-1 to win the Flight #1 (B) bracket. 

The RSC Copa Real Invitations easily had 7 of the top 10 teams in the State boasting the likes of Real So Cal Blue, Barcelona USA Academy (State Cup Semi-Finalists), FC Golden State (State Cup Champion) in Flight #1 (A) bracket as well.

It all came down to a Sunday afternoon matchup between SBSC (Flight B Champion) and Real So Cal Blue (Flight A Champion). Both teams came out determined to take home the trophy. SBSC was a much more organized and determined team scored early to go up 1-0, and getting another goal mid-way through the second half. This would hold up to be the game winner as RSC found a late goal for a 2-1 final score.  SBSC, your RSC Copa Real Invitational Champions!  It was a great weekend for Wilson’s team, testing themselves against the best teams in the state.

The tournament was a good opportunity for the team to get back on the field following time off over the holidays. SBSC will now begin preparing for the Cal South State Cup Tournament, which begins Saturday, February 16^th.

After defeating La Roca of Utah and tying DeAnza of Nor Cal they went on to beat NV Chelsea of Nevada 0-1 in the Final match. Congratulations to all the boys.

After defeating Colorado and Slammers in the group stage the girls lost their only game of the weekend to Del Mar Sharks 2-1. The team then made the Semi Finals through a wildcard placemnet where they faced an undefeated Notts Forest team. Karynna Wells and Miya Pico scored the goals that saw the girls win 2-1 in double over time. In the Final GU14 White faced Del Mar Sharks again. This was a fiercely contested game that finished 0-0 and went to penalty kicks to decide the champion. Santa Barbara Made 3 of their 4 penalties and Hailee Rios made 2 saves as the girls were crowned Champions of the 2012 Surf Thanksgiving Tournament

Westmont College’s Gustavo Hernandez has been a stellar central defender for the team as he rounds out his three-year collegiate career.

In Gustavo’s first season at Westmont he had an instant impact on his team with 17 starts. He recorded his first collegiate assist as a Warrior against nationally ranked Fresno Pacific. In his Sophmore campaign, he followed up right where he left off, starting 13 games and scoring one goal against Cal State San Marcos. For his efforts he was named Golden State Athletic Conference Defensive performer.

Gustavo has started all 10 games in his senior year (2012), leading the team in minutes played. The warriors are currently 5-6-1 and are making efforts to push themselves into the post season with just three games remaining. We wish Gustavo and Westmont best of luck in the remainder of the 2012 campaign.

At the Santa Barbara Soccer Club level Gustavo was an integral part of a very successful team. At Dos Pueblos High School Gustavo was a four-year all-league selection, MVP as a senior, and a member of the National Honor Society.

South Carolina State University Bulldogs’s Penner – an anchor to the team’s defense currently in 1st place in the NCAA Division I “Great West” Conference standings.

No player has had a greater impact on her team over the past three seasons than Kaitlynn Penner who has become a mainstay in the back line for Division I and Great West conference SCSU. South Carolina State is coming off of a 3rd place finish in 2011 in the Great West Conference and looking to improve in the standings and take the Bulldogs to their first NCAA appearance in Head coach Glad Bugariu’s 4 year history. Local Nipomo High School and Santa Barbara Soccer Club standout, Penner, has become the anchor to the team’s defensive presence and has helped the 2012 team to 7 wins already this season. Once again this year, Kaitlynn has started in every game and become a major contributor in the program’s rise to the top of the conference.

In Kaitlynn’s sophomore campaign at SCSU she played in 16 games. She dished out one assist for one point while earning Great West Conference (GWC) Fall Academic Honors. In her freshman year she started in all 20 games with one goal off four shots for two total points.

At Nipomo High School, Kaitlynn was named to the First Team All-League in 2009 and 2010. She earned four varsity letters in soccer and track while at Nipomo. Her ultimate goal is to graduate from South Carolina State and enter into the field of Physical Therapy or Personal Training.

1st Place & Undefeated America East Conference Leading Boston University on a roll!

Kai – an anchor to the team’s defense has already made a huge impact for the Terrier’s in her young career.

In Kai’s first season as a Terrier she had a huge impact on her team with appearances in all 19 games. She tallied her first collegiate goal on September 14, 2011 against Harvard. In addition, Miller was named America East Rookie of the week for the week of September 19, 2011.

Kai is picking up exactly where she left off the 2011 campaign, appearing in 11 games, making 10 starts already in 2012. She recorded an assist in the season opener against Central Connecticut (Aug. 17) and dished out the assist for Ana Cuffia’s game-winning goal against ACC power NC State (Sept. 20). Already halfway through the season Miller has led the Terrier’s to the top of the American East standings!

Kai was a four-year starter at Santa Barbara High School, during her sophomore year was named the All-League Defensive MVP, and as junior and senior was an all-league first-team honoree. In addition, Miller was a member of the National Honor Society in her time at SBHS as well.

 #19 NSCAA Nationally Ranked Williams College

Ritter – an anchor to the team’s defensive has already made four college appearances in his young career.

In Troy’s first season he has had an impact on his team with 4 appearances in his young career.  Last fall Williams finished 9-4-3 and missed out on advancing to the NCAA Tournament for only the third time in the 19 years NESCAC has permitted NCAA post-season team play.  Once again in 2012 the Ephs are playing a rigorous schedule, which is among the strongest in the country.

The NESCAC Conference has long been one of the nation’s deepest and most challenging Division III conferences.  All of the NESCAC teams have dramatically improved and four different NESCAC teams have gone to the NCAA Final Four over the last five years, substantiating the league’s overall strength.

At the Santa Barbara Soccer Club level Troy helped lead his team to the State Cup Championship, President’s Cup Regional Championship and eventually National Runner’s Up at the National Finals In North Carolina as a U15. His team went Undefeated in Coast Soccer League at U17 playing Gold getting promoted to Premier the following year. 

In Troy’s freshman campaign at Williams he has already made appearances against Westfield, Connecticut College, Bates & Trinity. In addition, Ritter will make his presence known against the best Division III teams in the country with regional and national power- house opponents such as Amherst, Bowdoin & Tufts.

Boston University Terrier’s Spivey – an anchor to the team’s defensive presence against the best teams in the country with opponents #13 St. John’s, #11 Boston College, #16 Wake Forrest, #1 North Carolina, #3 UCONN and #24 Brown. 

No player has had a greater impact on his team over the past two seasons than Sanford Spivey who has become a mainstay in the back line for Division I and American East power Boston University.   Boston University is a seven time American East Conference Champion with 14 NCAA Tournament Appearances in the programs storied history.  Local Santa Barbara High School and Santa Barbara Soccer Club standout, Spivey, has become the anchor to Boston University’s defensive presence. 

Sanford was an NSCAA High School All-American his junior and senior year and earned ESPN Rise All-America and NSCAA California State Player of the Year honors as a senior at Santa Barbara High School.  In addition, coaches and players voted Sanford as the most dedicated and respected player on his team. 

In Spivey’s freshman campaign at BU he was one of only three Terriers to appear in all 18 games.  For his on field success he was named to the America East Conference All-Rookie Team.  In addition, he registered his first career point with an assist against Seton Hall and helped the Terriers shut out six teams, including then-No. 22 Providence.

Now a sophomore, Sanford has turned into a team leader and picked up where he left off in his freshman campaign.  He has started all 8 games and logged in a team high in minutes played against the toughest schedule in the country.  Spivey has made his presence known against the best teams in the country with opponents #13 St. John’s, #11 Boston College, #16 Wake Forrest, #1 North Carolina, #3 UCONN and #24 Brown.

Congratulations to Our State and National Champions who were deservingly honored pre-game on the field.

The coaches game was really well attended and the coaches did not disapoint providing 5 goals and many more talking points and action moments that should keep us entertained until next year. A big thank you to all the coaches that competed, it was a lot of fun.

Many people have shared that they thought it was a great night, shared that they are excitred for next year alreday and shared ideas on how we can make it bigger and better next year.

After losing their first game the boys went on to score 11 goals in three games to claim victory beating Ballistic SC from the Bay Area 6-1, Walnut Creek also from Nor Cal 3-0 in the Semi’s and CC Condors 2-0 in the final. The team progressed with every game to conclude their first competitive outing of theseason with a tropy.

The girls tied both of their pool play games 1-1 even though they dominated both games. The semi finals on Sunday morning was the turning point as they were combining and exploiting the outsides of the field and finished the game with a 2-0 win.

The final was a replay of the previous day’s game against the Santa Clarita Magic. The game was a hard fought physical match with both teams having equal possession. The game ended regulation 0-0. In the first minute of the second overtime Natanie Earle driving down the left flank cut the ball back from the touch line and served
a dangerous ball into the box which  was knocked out to Natalia Valladeres and on her first touch drove the ball far post to put the girls in the lead for the first time in the match. The girls held strong for the last 6 minutes to end the game 1-0. The girls played the tournament with only 1 substitute and showed their resilience and competitive nature and deserved their first finals victory. 

This is an oustanding acheivment by everyone involved.

SBSC won 7 games to become Champions against some of the top teams in the Country. In the final defeating last year’s National Champion the South Bay Gunners (1-0), goal scored by Chairat Puengrod and assisted by Francisco Arroyo.  Shutting out the Gunners was a complete team effort on defense every player played solid defensively. Road to the Championship:  Defeated South Bay Gunners (1-0) in the Final in Rancho Capistrano California.

Semi-Final defeated Pateadores (2-1) in Lancaster.

Quarter-Final defeated Attack FC (2-1) in Lancaster

Sweet 16 defeated CFC Untouchables (2-1) in Camarillo.

Round of 32 defeated Riverside FC (1-0) in Camarillo.

In Bracket Pool play to advance to the round of 32 SBSC won two matches:

Santa Barbara Soccer Club U-14 White defeated Poway Vaqueros (7-0) in Lancaster.

Santa Barbara Soccer Club U-14 White defeated Chivas USA Academy (2-0) in Lancaster.

This is the second Cal South National Championship that this team has won in two years.  In 2010 SBSC won at the U-12 age group division and also won the Regional IV National Championship 2010.

SBSC was rated number 1 in the nation in 2010.

The Team will now compete for the Regional IV Championship next month from June 17^th thru 24^th in Phoenix Arizona.

If they win the Region IV Championship they will travel to Little Rock South Carolina for the National Championship in July 2012.

the BU14 White had consecutive 2-1 victroies against Attack Green of SanDiego and Pateadores from Orange County to put themseves with in one game of winning National Cup.

BU16 White moved on to the Semi-Final of National Cup scoring 8 goals in 2 games. They beat Real SO Cal 4-0 and SMSC 4-1 as they move confidently on to the next round. Should they win Saturday they play in the final Sunday.

BU17 & GU17 White lost in the round of 16 this past weekend

The team advanced to the playoffs coming in second in pool play with 2 wins and one loss. They beat Newbury Park Black cats 5:0 and Simi Valley Chivas 7:0. Their loss was to Real So Cal Blue 0:5.

For the playoffs they played Real So cal again, this time the game was a lot closer; 1:3.

In the tournament the team scorers were: Johanna Holland, Molly Autio and Blythe Hastings each with 3 goals, Kate Dalforno with 2 goals and Emilia Wahlberg and Grace Blankenhorn each with 1 goal.

Cal South scores in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP)

 Cal South won 6 out of 8 Championships at the Region IV ODP Championships in Phoenix, AZ over the weekend.  Cal South has won more National and Regional ODP championships than any other state association.

 Players representing Santa Barbara Soccer Club on these teams included:

 Sam Strong who won with the ’96’s

 Avery Swartz, Emmanuel Boateng & Joshua Savett who won with the ’94’s

 -and-

 Luis Carbahal who won with the ’97’s

 Justin Vom Steeg was supposed to be with ’97’s as well, but was called in with the U-14 National Team Camp in Guadalajara, Mexico. He played in his first game on Tuesday. Team USA beat Chivas 1-0.

Santa BArbara SC Players Participating:

With concern over the negative effects of fast food diet and inactivity of children growing all over the world, the children enrolled at Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS), are being given lessons on diet and nutrition in addition to technical soccer skills. 

The coaches at the school hope the curriculum will help children foster an appreciation for good health. 

“The kids are usually surprised when we talk about nutrition and fitness, but it’s a really important part of the game,” said Chris Rosimus, a qualified nutritionist and MUSS coach in Abu Dhabi.

“Professional players learn about diet and training really early on in their careers and we want to use the Manchester United team as role models to motivate the children towards a healthier lifestyle. Our goal is that students should apply the health advice in their everyday live so that they can have an overall healthy lifestyle and excel in the sport.”

The first nutrition session discussed the importance of hydration. The children were encouraged to think about what kind of drink they should consume before, during and after a football match. 

After the session, many parents said  that their children chose water over canned drinks in a bid to improve their health and ability.

“In football, health is just as important as learning how to deliver a crisp pass or a winning shot, and in terms of quality of life and longevity it’s even more significant,” said Rosimus. 

A decline in the intake of calcium among school children is a matter of concern for both parents and teachers.

Teachers opine that calcium is important during early adolescence, when more  mineral is needed during a three to four year period when bone growth is at peak  and 40 per cent of total bone mass is accumulated.

Moreover, calcium strengthens bones and teeth and regulates muscle functioning, such as contraction and relaxation.  

“The junk food children consume today releases so much energy in them that they find it difficult to pay attention to the studies in the classroom,” Leila added.

While Thadhani, a marketing researcher, with three young school-going children said that many school students’ food contains junk food. 

“Children from grade one onwards are bombarded with fast food and cola advertisements. They should be given protein and calcium rich food instead of fast food and colas for strong bones and general health”.

Overall, this is a solid start to the tournament season as the GU15 White team prepares for the National Cup!

This year, the Goleta Relay For Life was better than anticipated. The goal was for 20 teams, and $25,000, but there were nearly 25 teams, 300 participants, and over $45,000 raised to help support cancer research!  

The event kicked off to the tune of Destiny’s Child’s "Survivor" and cancer survivors flooded the track for their commencement lap. The afternoon passed on with music, food (provided by Chili’s, Outback Steakhouse & McDonalds), games, and laughter until the sun began to set. At 8PM the Luminaria ceremony began, and the track was lit by hand-decorated bags in memory of and in honor of those who have fought cancer. At 10PM, the outdoor cinema started as well as the "Pajama Parade." Walkers continued on through the wee morning hours, taking shifts, loading up on coffee, and occasionally resting a bit back in the tents. As the hours passed on, people started looking more and more like zombies. The sun began to rise, and replacements started showing up providing relief for those who had taken the middle-of-the-night shifts. At 7:30 AM, yoga started and allowed some much-needed stretching. At about 8AM, with walkers still on the track, everybody began packing up in anticipation of the closing ceremonies. At 10AM, the Committee announced that we had surpassed our goal by more than $20,000 and we all took our final victory lap. Take that, cancer.

The girls played 6 games total, record 5-0-1, scoring 7 goals and conceding only 2 beating ACC Maverick, ranked 15th in Northern California, in the final.

Congratulations to the girls on a great victory and good luck to them as they continue to prepare for National Cup.

Congratulations to BU9 White who made it to the round of 16 this past weekend. Congratulations also to BU11 White and Girls U12 white made it to the round of 32.

Santa Barbara Soccer Club would like to congratulate Juan Pablo and his Family on this great achievment.

Coach Rudy Ybarra, BU13 White Head Coach, had this say in regard to Juan Pablo:

His commitment at training and matches are evidence that Juan Pablo is developing into a complete soccer player. His abilities on both sides of the ball are what make him a solid player at this current time. Juan Pablo is playing at Left back for our BU13 White Team and he is defending very well. His ability to make attacking runs from his left back position reminds me of Roberto Carlos, a stand out player for Brazil and Real Madrid in his playing days. To add Juan Pablo has developed into a goal scoring threat this season with his strong and accurate shooting ability, the service he provides from his overlapping attacking runs have created many scoring chances for his team. It is a pleasure to coach this young player and I look forward to being part of his future development as a player and person.

It is nice to see that (ODP) Olympic Development Program Scouts and Coaches have selected Juan Pablo Alvarez to part of this Great Program.

Brian comes to training ready to work day in day out he is very quick and has excellent speed. Brian’s technical development has really developed these past two years and his balls skills are very good. This is a credit to his hard work at training and the extra work he has put into working with the ball, attending the club 1V1 session. Brian can play in all three lines on the field as a Defender, Midfielder or Forward and this is a special quality that will help Brian in his future development as a soccer player. Brian always comes to training and matches with a smile on his face, his nick name is "SMILES" and he really does enjoy training and playing the beautiful game.
